It is Monday. The hardest day of the week for many of us. Let’s try this week to make Monday the hallmark in which we claim all that is good and great in life. This will be the week in which we reign victorious. We claim all these things in the name of the Divine.ake a moment a give yourself a huge stretch, and wake up. The first thing you want to do is say thank you for this day. Be thankful for the people in your life and that you woke up. We have so much to be thankful for, we don’t even realize it because of the daliy grindstone. Anyway, when you get ready in the bathroom, do the same thing as the night before, look at yourself in the mirror and say “I am going to have a great day, and nothing is going to get me down” I can do anything, with a smile!!

Prayer for a Good Day

Dear Lord,as I arise
And bend my knee to pray
I ask please place your guiding hand
Upon this busy day

All my yesterdays are said and done
Tomorrow may never be
But I give you full reign over this day
To make the best of me

May each little word I speak
Be filtered through your love
May all my thoughts be connected
To the heavenly courts above

And use my feet to take me
To where you want me to be
Guard my eyes that they would only
See what you want me to see

Give me a heart that longs to show
Others the way back home
And with these two hands help me
Fashion glory for your throne

From the great expanse of eternity
One day is all I can borrow
So help me Lord to take care of today
And we’ll talk again tomorrow Amen

May this week be great for you!

How can you love someone who turns their back on you and still forgive them from the heart?). He calls us back to himself – over and over and over again. Jesus’ story of the father and his two sons (sometimes called the parable of the prodigal son) is the longest parable in the gospels. What is the main point or focus of the story?

Luke 15:1-3, 11-32

Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying,” This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
So to them Jesus addressed this parable.” A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father,’ Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’ So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. Coming to his senses he thought, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’ So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.
His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; no longer deserve to be called your son.’ But his father ordered his servants, ‘Quickly, bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ Then the celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field
and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. The servant said to him,‘Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, ‘Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’ He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.”

Is it the contrast between an obedient and a disobedient son or is it between the warm reception given to a spendthrift son by his father and the cold reception given by the eldest son? Jesus contrasts the father’s merciful love with the eldest son’s somewhat harsh reaction to his errant brother and to the lavish party his joyful father throws for his repentant son. While the errant son had wasted his father’s money, his father, nonetheless, maintained unbroken love for his son. The son, while he was away, learned a lot about himself. And he realized that his father had given him love which he had not returned. He had yet to learn about the depth of his father’s love for him. His deep humiliation at finding himself obliged to feed on the husks of pigs and his reflection on all he had lost, led to his repentance and decision to declare himself guilty before his father. While he hoped for reconciliation with his father, he could not have imagined a full restoration of relationship. The father did not need to speak words of forgiveness to his son; his actions spoke more loudly and clearly! The beautiful robe, the ring, and the festive banquet symbolize the new life – pure, worthy, and joyful – of anyone who returns to God.

The prodigal could not return to the garden of innocence, but he was welcomed and reinstated as a son. The errant son’s dramatic change from grief and guilt to forgiveness and restoration express in picture-language the resurrection from the dead, a rebirth to new life from spiritual death. The parable also contrasts mercy and its opposite. The father, who had been wronged, was forgiving. But the eldest son, who had not been wronged, was unforgiving. His lack of forgiveness turns into contempt and pride. And his resentment leads to his isolation and estrangement from the community of forgiven sinners. In this parable Jesus gives a vivid picture of God and what God is like. God is truly kinder than us. He does not lose hope or give up when we stray. He rejoices in finding the lost and in welcoming them home. Do you know the joy of repentance and the restoration of relationship as a son or daughter of your heavenly Father?

“Lord Jesus, may I never doubt your love nor take for granted the mercy you have shown to me. Fill me with your transforming love that I may be merciful as you are merciful.”

Her prayers today likely ended with the prophetic quote of Jesus, “Into your hands I commend my spirit.”

Today Geraldine Ferraro lost her battle with blood cancer. She was born August 26, 1935. Most of us know her as the second woman to run for the Executive Office. Many of us had her as our Senator. She was much loved in the state of New York.

Geraldine spent her later years after politics in service of charities for many ethnic groups. Geraldine was a board member of the New York chapter of Easter Seals. Easter Seals is a nonprofit charitable organization that assists more than one million children and adults with autism and other disabilities and special needs annually through a network of more than 550 service sites in the United States, Canada, Australia and Puerto Rico. She desired to make sure that pension funds were fair and equitable for the struggling poor.
President Barack Obama praised Ferraro’s service and said she would have an impact on his daughters’ lives.

“Geraldine will forever be remembered as a trailblazer who broke down barriers for women and Americans of all backgrounds and walks of life,” he said in a statement. “… Sasha and Malia will grow up in a more equal America because of the life Geraldine Ferraro chose to live.”

Her life will live on in quotes that inspire us.

“And I have to tell you as a grandmother, I worry about the fact that my grandchildren are going to be paying for all the spending, including military spending, that has gone on and the tax cuts that have come through.”

“I do believe in the power of prayer.”

“I have been extremely lucky; I am a person who is currently living with a cancer that is under control.”

“If you think somebody cares about you and believes your life is worth saving, how can you give up?”

Rest In Peace

Furious about an unkind comment? Angry about a social snub? Say a prayer, even if you’re not religious. There have been several different schools of thought on this. When you were little your mother most likely told you to “pray for that child, or this child” Well research is starting to point in the direction that is can be possible that we can actually affect are emotional range by praying. Think about this for a moment. Do you stop to count to ten when you are angry? If the answer is yes than you are well on the way to proving that theory science is after.

New research from American and Dutch scientists shows praying can help ease anger, lower aggression and lessen the impact of provocation. “People often turn to prayer when they’re feeling negative emotions, including anger,” said Brad Bushman, a professor of communications and psychology at Ohio State University and a co-author of the study.

“We found that prayer really can help people cope with their anger, probably by helping them change how they view the events that angered them and helping them take it less personally.”

In research published online in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Bushman and his colleagues found that prayer helped to control anger regardless of the person’s religious affiliation, or if they attended church or prayed regularly.

In the first study they asked 53 U.S. college students to complete a questionnaire that measured levels of emotions such as anger, depression, tension, fatigue and vigor and then put them in a situation that could elicit an angry response.

Then the students were told to read a newspaper report about a cancer patient and randomly assigned to pray for her or to just think about her. Students who prayed for the patient had lower self-reported anger levels.

In other studies Bushman, Ryan Bremner of the University of Michigan, and Sander Koole, of UV University in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, found similar results about the power of prayer in dealing with anger, aggression and provocation.

Sunday afternoon as I watched the replay of our bombing of Libya I could not help but think about war and death and stewardship. Listen, I am old enough to understand that the war is inevitable in society and history of humankind for one reason or another. I am not naïve to the fact that we have financial and political interests in the world that better benefit our needs. I do wonder though if we had to handle this with such a heavy hand by risking possible mass murder.

Most people would probably say it’s “unjustified killing”. In civil society the judicial system decides whether killings are just or unjust, not the bible. There are laws that apply on the battlefield as well. Things like Use of Force and Rules of Engagement. For instance, it is against the Geneva Convention to use flamethrowers to kill the enemy. However, it is perfectly acceptable to nuke another country, killing hundreds of thousands people instantly and then subsequently hundreds of thousands more over the course of the following months from the radiation.

Many people would say that the distinction between killing and murdering in a wartime situation would have to do with whether or not the war is just. Again, it would be decided by the courts, not by what the bible says. Romans 13: 1-2 trumps it, obey your leaders as if unto God. God put those leaders over you so you must obey them. Do we really obey or do we just concede. Or, do we just not care? There are large numbers of African American men and women who serve the country with commitment and loyalty than is spoken about. These young men and women are our brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, nieces, nephews. They are following the orders of high command.

As good stewards of the world that God gave us, we have to care about what those actions mean. Do we rectify every infraction with harsh punishment? By no means are the actions of Muammar Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi excused. He is a murderer. Plain and simple. He broke the vow of leadership when he opted to murder innocent people on a plane for no other reason than retaliation. He continues to violate the freedom and common dignity and decency of his people by choosing to silence their voices of opinion by death. That is unacceptable. Period.

What we must do is write our Congressmen and Congresswomen and let them know how we feel about such unforgiving final options. If we do not begin the conversations on what actions like this mean to us than we are not living up to what is commanded us by God. That stewardship is over all that he gave and created in Genesis. Even if you do not believe in Christianity, there is a natural order and care to the universe. Do we even spend time thinking about that?

There has been much made about the misconduct of religious priests and ministers. It is by introducing a clear and concise ways to deal with your congregation. This will not allow for the lines of familiarity to grow. They have also introduced a sample code of ethics for congregational leaders as follows:

1. Provide spiritual guidance and teaching for congregants, congregational staff members, and members of the larger community.

2. Treat staff and congregants with dignity and respect.

3. Uphold integrity through honest communication.

4. Nurture their personal religious life through prayer, meditation, and study.

5. Maintain healthy boundaries with congregants by nurturing family relationships and/or friendships with others whom they do not also serve as religious leader.

6. Refrain from making sexual overtures and engaging in sexual relationships (other than with one’s spouse), or sexually harassing congregants, whether or not the leader and/or congregant is married.

7. Be accountable to an identified supervisor or group of peers that conducts regular performance reviews, seeking input from members of the congregation.

8. Avoid disclosing private information about congregants.

9. Recognize the power dynamic in their role with congregants, using that power to seek the well being of those they serve and never for their own personal ends.

10. Limit their professional role to pastor, teacher, or priest to avoid dual relationships and arbitrary boundaries with congregants.

A safe and healthy place to worship is something that we should all have for our human dignity. It is also important to remember that not everyone that wears a collar has committed some sexual sin. If these guidelines were instututed this would alleviate all the issues at hand.

In light of all the craziness that is happening in our world with natural diasters and war, let us place all our worries and cares before the One we know cares.Throughout the Bible we are constantly reminded to “fear not.” It is not God’s will that we live in anxiety or fear, ever. Remember, He is well able to protect you, your family and all who take a stand on His Word. The following is a prayer based on Scripture.

We always seem to rush about thinking that we must handle everything in our lives ourselves by ourselves. That is far from the truth. We should never feel ashamed to lay before our stronger Power our concerns for safety and protection. You can pray this over your children as they leave your homes for the day. It will give you a chance to have a few scared minutes with them.

The light of God surrounds you,

The love of God enfolds you,

The power of God protects you,

And the presence of God watches over you;

Wherever you are, God is.

Put yourself and God in remembrance of His Word and know that the only “safe” place there will ever be is under His protection. There is nothing that you can’t bare if you lay it there.
